The Artwork Of
Marilyn Read
I grew up near the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains in Ogden, Utah. During childhood, I observed the mountains from elementary school windows to my heart’s content. As art became a lifelong ritual for me, I have returned again and again to landscape as my primary focus.

Contemporary Landscape
Painting from nature evolves symbolically for me, more so than literal representation. My focus is shape and color within a flattened picture plane, as opposed to an illusion of deep space through perspective. Simplified forms hold significance for me, evoking a personalized sense of place in the environment.
About Me
I studied art at Weber State University, followed by the University of Hawaii in Honolulu, where I graduated with a teaching degree. I earned my BFA in art from the University of Utah. I enjoy writing, hiking, and exploring Utah’s landscape. I am currently an artist-in-residence at WorkshopSLC.

Previous Works
This older body of work involves stylized figures which are dream-like and archetypal. I begin with traditional watercolor painting then collage cut-outs onto the surface of the paper, resulting in a bas-relief effect. The process has similarities to piecing together a quilt or a mosaic.
